Tips for Moving Thanksgiving Weekend

New home. Friends sitting on the floor in the new apartment and eating pizza after unpacking. Housewarming.

Thanksgiving weekend certainly is not the ideal time to make a move.  But here are some useful suggestions to make your move easier, and to keep you in the holiday spirit while you’re relocating.

Get Organized
As you know, things go more smoothly if your prepare ahead of time.  This same rule applies to moving as well.  Even though it’s easy to get distracted during the holidays, be sure to get everything packed ahead of time for the movers.

Be Prepared to Pay Extra
You will find that many moving companies will be closed on Thanksgiving day so you should be prepared to pay a little extra if you have to move during this time period.  So as a suggestion factor this into your budget, and start shopping around early for the best price.

Get Rid of Stuff You Don’t Need
If you have old clothes, furniture, dishes, etc. that you no longer want or need then go ahead and donate them to a thrift store, or hold a yard sale prior to packing.  This will save you time and money in the long run, and which allow you more time to celebrate Thanksgiving in your new home.

Start Early

If you’re planning on using professional movers try to be the very first job of the day.  If you book a move in the late morning or in the afternoon you always run the chance of there being unforeseen problems with the company’s other moves which may make your moving crew late.

Make Moving Fun
Just because you’re moving during Thanksgiving doesn’t mean it can’t be a fun experience.  Go ahead and put up some holiday decorations in your new home to enjoy as you move in.  Also bring some holiday treats for you and your moving crew to enjoy and get everyone in the holiday mood.

Plan Your Thanksgiving Meal
Since you probably won’t have time to cook a big meal you should probably make alternative plans. Some of your options are having food delivered, or if you’re feeling generous and filled with holiday spirit, you can take you moving helpers to a nearby restaurant for some Thanksgiving chow.  Some grocery stores even offer advance ordering of Thanksgiving meals as well.

Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day
In the spirit of that old saying, don’t plan on trying to unpack everything in one day.  So our best suggestion is to unpack the things you’ll need the most first.  We suggest kitchen items, toiletries, and bedding.
